Social Media News
After three days without power and four and ahalf days without phone or Internet access I buried in emails and deliverables. Some of these social media headlines that have grabbed my attention are:
Report: Daytime Is Online Primetime: Daytime is the Internet’s primetime, says Mediaweek’s Mike Shields, citing a new report from Nielsen Online. During the traditional 9-5 work week, 65% of online video viewers streamed at least one piece of content in October, according to the report, versus 51% of viewers who did so on weekends from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Source: Mediaweek
Pew: Most Will Access Internet Via Mobile By 2020. Anyone expecting 2009 to be the long-awaited “Year of Mobile” may have to wait a little longer. Wireless devices will be the primary means of connecting to the Internet for most people worldwide in 2020, according to a new report by the Pew Internet & American Life Project. Source: Mediapost
The challenge of getting noticed on Facebook, social networks. Although neither Procter & Gamble nor Facebook will disclose how well the CPG giant’s ads are performing on the social-networking site, the relationship exemplifies the challenges of trying to get users’ attention in the social space, according to this article. Brand advertisers “can be more intrusive, but the outcome will not be positive. Or they can create genuinely entertaining commercials, but spend ungodly sums to do so,” Randall Stross writes. “When Facebook convinces advertisers to stage Super Bowl-sized entertainment every day, its future will be assured.” Source: The New York Times
Kmart Enlists Bloggers For Social Net Campaign: A sponsored social networking campaign enlisting the help of six well-known bloggers is yielding big buzz for Kmart and encouraging consumers to give the retailer another look during the critical holiday season. Kmart gave each of six influential bloggers a $500 gift certificate to go on a shopping spree in the store and then blog about their shopping experiences in any way they saw fit (no censorship). The bloggers clearly disclosed this sponsored arrangement in their respective postings.Source: Mediapost
When marketing, don’t forget about blogs: With all the hype surrounding social-networking sites, it’s easy to forget how integral blogging is to a successful social-media marketing effort. Reaching out to bloggers can create all four essential components of a great social-media marketing push: User-created content, positive third-party feedback, search results and social networking. Survey: Social networks attracting women in their 40s. Forty-something women are actively using social-networking sites, according to a survey by SheSpeaks. More than 70% of those with children ages 13 to 17 discussed products on such sites, and more than four out of 10 had established personal profiles. “These women have started to use the Web and social networks in ways that mirror the rest of their lives,” SheSpeaks CEO Aliza Freud said.
